Maize Milling Investment in Mozambique

Empresa de Comercialização Agrícola Ltd (ECA) is a market-oriented extension programme boosting the incomes of smallholder farmers near Chimoio in the Sofala Province of Mozambique. ECA supplies inputs on credit and provides extension advice, engaging farmers with individual land holdings of 0.5 to 2 hectares.

Reporting to AgDevCo/BAGC and the Senior Management Team of ECA, Wellspring were asked to project manage the development of a business/project plan, financial model and due diligence for further investment into a downstream Maize Grits and Flour Milling operation.

The investment was approved and as a result over 13,500 smallholder farmers will have access to improved inputs and linked to reliable markets, providing incremental incomes of $10.1 million over the first seven years of the project.

What would a genuinely African system of business learning look like?

We are currently engaged in an action-research exercise aimed at developing a self-funding system to build capacity among rural businesses, working with Kenya Markets Trust and the Open University in the UK.

Tea Production in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania

For the past 12 months Wellspring has been contracted by the Chai Project, managed and funded by the Wood Family Trust in partnership with the Gatsby Charitable Foundation. The assignment was to assist with the restructuring and change management process of an out-grower tea producer association with 15,000 members connected to a large tea processing factory in Southern Tanzania.

Bio-acaricide Market Research

Supported by DfID, the International Center for Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) and Nairobi-based commercial partners Real IPM contracted Wellspring to explore the acaricides (tick killing) market in Kenya to help guide planning for a new, non-chemical product to one day hit the market.

Current acaricides are losing their impact, farmers are desperate to prevent tick-borne diseases (mainly East Coast Fever) & cattle are increasingly valuable to Kenya’s growing, urbanising economy. “Kenya wants a new solution”, was the sentiment repeated by farmers, shopkeepers and distributors alike.

Improved strategies for linking markets to large numbers of farmers

We’re excited to be kicking off an assignment with Farm Africa, working on new and improved strategies for linking markets to large numbers of farmers. Farm Africa are good at introducing new technologies, changing behaviour and improving production at farm level in the crops, fisheries, livestock and forestry sectors. They recently incubated the Sidai franchise, a business with a network of centres to provide high-quality livestock services in rural Kenya
