About Wellspring

We work in a range of connected market sectors across UK, Europe and Africa. At national and regional level we carry out market research, analysis and investment advisory work in addition to developing strategies for improving sector growth, innovation and human capital. At company and organizational level we develop and oversee projects and investments, advise on business growth strategies, and provide interim senior management, consultancy and training for private and publicly funded clients.

Wellspring has carried out over 50 long and short term projects in the past nine years. Alongside our partners we have facilitated investments into businesses, research and development projects in excess of £190million.

Michael Shaw

Managing Director of Wellspring, Michael has nineteen years’ experience in business, investment and management consulting in Europe, USA and Africa. Michael was previously Executive Director with AgDevCo and has since held various interim Director and CEO roles in addition to his consulting work. He holds an MBA and is a visiting fellow to the Open University Business School.

Penny Hayler

Director of Operations and co-founder, Penny oversees contracting, administration and coordinates our projects across the region. Penny also provides practical support to MSMEs on governance structure, accounting, operational processes and management.

Hunter Nielson

Hunter Nielson

Hunter joined Wellspring in 2011 after ten years experience working in Africa for organisations including The World Bank, Oxford University, USAID and ACTESA. Hunter holds an MSc in Agricultural Economics and leads multiple consulting assignments for key partners.

Maurice Nduranu

Maurice Nduranu

Maurice is an associate with expertise in finance and investment. Previously he was East Africa Portfolio Manager for Acumen Fund, responsible for agribusiness and housing portfolio. Maurice holds a Masters in Financial Engineering from U.C. Berkeley’s Haas School of Business.

Harry Brainch

Harry Brainch

Harry, a Wellspring associate, has experience of agriculture and energy markets and in private business in sub-saharan Africa, helping to lead a successful startup in the solar M2M sector. He has worked on projects in the mobile technology and livestock sectors. Harry holds an MSc in Environmental Technology with Economics from Imperial College, London.

Francis Cattermole

Francis Cattermole

Francis is an associate consultant with Wellspring and Occupational Psychologist with 20 years’ consultancy experience in a wide variety of business sectors, focusing on performance, management, culture and change. Francis is a lecturer for the Open University Business School.

Steve Kamau

Steve Kamau

A Research Analyst, Steve has an MBA in Strategic Management and Marketing from the United States International University and also holds a BCOM in Finance and ACCA qualifications. Steve supports a broad range of Wellspring project assignments.

Associates

We have a core team of managers and consultants. We then contract from a pool of known and trusted associates and partners with their own expertise and specialisms as and when a project requires. This gives us the flexibility and capacity to undertake a variety of assignments at short notice and across multiple locations.
